Naturism in Iceland

What is naturism?

  • It views all humans as being created equal.
  • It respects others regardless of sex, sexuality, race, religion, creed or other differences.
  • It believes in the dignity of a human being and equal rights for all.
  • It considers nudity as being natural and respects both our own and others’ bodies as they are.
  • It is a social nude culture, which includes pure life forms and respect for nature.

Man and nature/environment is a whole. This idea had many supporters in the 19th century and from this thought the nude movement started. One should cultivate his/her body and live a healthy life.
You should not be ashamed of your body:

Nudity is normal
Nudity is beautiful
There is no shame in nudity

It is not only a question of being naked to sunbathe but rather the freedom to be able to be without clothes when you have the opportunity, both indoors and outdoors. There are not many things you can’t do naked.

Children brought up in a naturist environment have a more wholesome attitude towards nudity.

Nudism, on the other-hand, is more about just being nude. The word is also often used for the naturist movement in the USA, where nudist traditions differ from Europe.

There are no clear definitions of the difference between naturism and nudism, but there are many interpretations of these words. This has also changed during the years. The word “naturism” was not common in Europe until the sixties in the past century. The word “nudism” was more common before. In German speaking countries the word “Freikörperkultur”, abbreviated “FKK”, is used.

Naturists come from diverse backgrounds and have wide-ranging opinions just like other people. That’s why how much emphasis is put on the original ideology of naturism varies so much, however the essential core of naturism is the acceptance of nudity as something very natural.
